Medical School Application and Matriculation Stats

Here are some fun facts from AAMC’s latest data on U.S. medical school applications and matriculants by school, state of legal residence, and sex, 2012. 1. New York State has by far the most med schools, at 13. 2. The five U.S. med schools that received the fewest applications were: Missouri Kansas City (111 applicants), North Carolina – East Carolina-Brody (307), Mississippi (368 applicants), South Dakota-Sanford (525 applicants), and LSU Shreveport (811 applicants). 3. The five schools that received the most applications were: George Washington (14,509 applicants), Pennsylvania – Drexel (12,692 applicants), Georgetown (11,733 applicants), and Boston (11,640 applicants), and New York Medical (11,422 applicants). 4. Not surprisingly, the D.C. med schools received the most out-of-states applications: George Washington (99.6%), Georgetown (99.6%), and Howard (99.4%). Other schools with exceptionally high out-of-state application rates include: Brown-Alpert (98.9%), Dartmouth-Geisel (98.5%), Nebraska – Creighton (97.1%), Washington U. St. Louis (96%), Yale (95.6%), Tennessee – Vanderbilt (93.9%), West Virginia (93.7%), Maryland – Uniformed Services-Hebert (93.3%), Duke (93.2%), St. Louis (92.8%), and Harvard (92.4%). 5. On the flip side, Georgia – Mercer came in first with highest percentage of in-state applications at 99.9%. (100% of its matriculants were in-state). 6. The school with the largest number of 2012 matriculants was Indiana with 335 students. Other large classes include: Illinois (315), Michigan – Wayne State (290 matriculants), MC Georgia (230 matriculants), Minnesota (230 matriculants), and U. Washington (220 matriculants). 7. Schools with high female representation include: UMDNJ-RW Johnson (67.2% female), Tennessee – Meharry (61.0% female), Hawaii-Burns (60.6% female), New Mexico (58.3% female), New Jersey – Cooper Rowan (58% female), Maryland (57.5% female), and Dartmouth-Geisel (57.5 female). 8. Med schools with the fewest matriculated females are: West Virginia – Marshall-Edwards (30.3% female), Nevada (32.4% female), Utah (32.9% female), UCLA-Drew (33.3% female), Oklahoma (34.8%), East Tennessee-Quillen (34.7% female), Maryland – Uniformed Services-Hebert (35.1% female), and Kentucky – Louisville (35.5% female). 9. A few schools hit the 50/50 mark exactly in male/female distribution: Pennsylvania – Commonwealth, Mayo, and Chicago Med-Franklin, FIU-Wertheim. //
